The New Zealand Government proposes increasing the speed limit on State Highway 1.

This will be from Orewa to Warkworth in north Auckland, aiming to boost economic growth and productivity. The motorway would have a new speed limit of 110km/h if approved.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown stated that the proposal supports this by reducing travel times and increasing efficiency for north-of-Auckland travel. The consultation will last four weeks, starting September 3 and ending October 1.

Since their opening in 2009, the Northern Gateway Toll Road and Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway have not caused any fatalities in crashes.

The government’s Accelerate NZ plan aims to grow the economy and reduce travel time. Also, increase productivity on the transport network.

No plans have been made to change the speed limit of the Johnstons Hill tunnels, which is 80km/h.
