Grandfather Gets Mixed Verdict On Sexual Assault Counts

Updated: 2:00pm – The sentencing for a 65-year-old man has been adjourned to Monday after the court handed down a guilty verdict on one count of sexual assault and a not guilty verdict on one count of sexual assault and one count of rape.

The accused appeared before Justice Vincent Perera at the Suva High Court after he was found guilty by all three assessors on Thursday.

It was alleged that the accused raped and sexually assaulted his seven-year-old granddaughter between January 2012 and December 2014 in Nasinu.

The court heard the victim was residing with her grandparents at the time of the incident.

In sentencing submissions Defence Lawyer Filimoni Vosarogo said the accused was 65 years of age, had been remanded for five months and was remorseful.

State Prosecutor Swastika Sharma advised the court on the age gap between the accused and the victim was 52 years and stated that the accused took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability and the accused had previous convictions.
