Updated: 7:36am – High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo has sentenced the three uncles from Tailevu to 14 years imprisonment after they were convicted of raping their 13-year-old nephew.

Justice Temo has also set a non-parole period of 12 years.

He had given each man 12 years imprisonment and 4 years for aggravating factors but deducted one year as they had served 7 months in remand and another year as they were first-time offenders.

The first uncle is 39 years, the second is 35 years and the third uncle is 52 years.

Justice Temo said that this was a serious breach of trust as the three were related to the 13-year-old boy.

He said he will be passing long sentences as a warning to would-be child offenders.

Justice Temo had earlier said that the judges are sick and tired of giving harsh sentences for rapes but these cases just keep coming.

He says for a small island nation like Fiji, there are so many cases of rape.

Justice Temo says “Fiji the Way the World Should Be” is now “Fiji the Way the World Shouldn’t Be”.

He found three uncles from Tailevu guilty of raping their 13-year-old nephew while the fourth uncle was found not guilty of rape.

The incidents occurred in Tailevu between November 2015 to March last year.
