Updated: 6:17am – Kiwis are getting their “survival kits” ready for Cyclone Gita, but you’re unlikely to find these items on nutritionists’ lists.

Supermarkets reported they were experiencing a busy Monday ahead of the storm that’s forecast to hit overnight. And many Kiwis took to social media to share their survival necessities – including alcohol and chocolate.

Wellington Twitter user Sue Teodoro shared a picture of her wine and chilli-flavoured chocolate beside some tools and heavy-duty Scotch tape.

The Roydvale Pony Club said on Facebook: “This is not a drill! Temperature is expected to drop dramatically so might pay to put the [horses’] covers on tomorrow night and stock up on chocolate and wine – oh and batteries and water”.

Antoinette Laird, of New World in the Wellington suburb of Thorndon, said the supermarket was having a very busy Monday night.

“It looks like people are finally getting the message about being prepared for an event like the predicted storm.”

Bottled water, in particular, was flying off the shelves and being restocked at New World Thorndon and elsewhere, Laird said.

“Likewise, long life products like tinned fish and soup along with batteries.”

Laird said she urged everyone, including New World staff and customers to stay safe and to look out for each other and their neighbours.
