Man sentenced for raping woman | NZ FIJI TIMES

UPDATED: 6;07am – A man has been sentenced in absentia for seventeen years behind bars for raping a woman who was in a training centre in Wailoku, Tamavua.

Akuila Navuda on the morning of 22nd December, 2006 approached the woman and dragged her to a nearby bush.

The woman is believed to have been raped in the wee hours of that morning while preparing breakfast.

High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo in sentencing Navuda says the level of violence was very high as he had threatened her before raping her.

Judge Temo says the deterrent sentence is to punish people like Navuda and warn other would be offenders. Navuda will be eligible for parole after serving sixteen years imprisonment.
