The Ministry of Education in Fiji has introduced secondary school graduates to teaching at the primary level. This comes due to 580 vacant primary school teacher positions.
However, new teacher recruits are being viewed for proficiency in areas like teaching physics in secondary schools.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro acknowledges that the Ministry cannot prevent individuals from seeking better-paying opportunities outside the education sector.
The Ministry is working to fill vacancies and provide necessary training for those who wish to continue as primary school teachers.
The Ministry collaborates with the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service to interview and recruit teachers from training institutions.
Radrodro emphasizes the need for more resources in STEM subjects, particularly physics. He was actively addressing the current shortage and high demand.
