A woman has died after a car crashed into a shop on a busy road in south Auckland.

Police said officers were at 176 Great South Rd in Papatoetoe, where a red car crashed into Batra Shoes on Monday morning. Auckland Inspector Duncan Hall confirmed a woman had died and said police were working to establish the cause of the crash.

“We’re not too sure what we’re dealing with yet,” he said. Hall said the shop was closed at the time and no-one else was injured. Part of Great South Rd will be closed while police conduct a scene examination. A staff member confirmed the car had hit the fashion side of its shop, which sells shoes, Indian clothing and imitation jewellery.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said one person was initially trapped in the vehicle and they were “working to clean up the scene”.

A shopkeeper across the road said she did not see the accident but heard a loud “crashing sound”. “We weren’t open when it happened but I was in town and just heard this huge bang,” she said.

Great South Rd, between Kolmar Rd and Charles St, has been closed while a scene examination takes place. Diversions are in place on Great South Rd at East Tamaki Rd and Hoteo Ave and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

St John sent one ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene. Auckland Transport tweeted about the crash, asking motorists to use an alternative route or avoid the area.
