NATIONAL NEWS: A burning mountain of tyres in the Canterbury town of Rolleston

A consuming pile of tires that heaved crest of dark poisonous smoke in the Canterbury town of Rolleston yesterday has been put out.

The fire started at about 4.30pm yesterday evening in a fence and spread to a huge heap of neglected tires around 30 meters high and 50 meters in length on a property on Weedons Ross Road close to State Highway 1.

At its tallness, in excess of 40 firemen and 16 vehicles combat the blast, and occupants were advised to evade the region and keep their windows shut in view of the smoke.

The fire was at long last put out and groups left the scene at about 11.30pm.

Fire agents will come back to the property today to find out how the blast began.
