A person has died after a fire broke out in a Christchurch house overnight. Emergency services were called to Gosport St in Aranui about 2.15am on Friday.

A St John spokesman said two people were taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries. Neighbour Lois Howarth told RNZ she woke to someone yelling “help”, then heard a loud bang and saw flames “roaring out the kitchen window”.

“It banged when the kitchen started burning – ‘bang’ – gee it was loud. It’s the worst fire I’ve ever seen.” She told RNZ two adults and two children had lived next door for about 18 months.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) shift manager Brent Dunn said there would be a multi-agency briefing on Friday morning with the Fenz command unit heading to the site.
