Senior Sergeant Jennifer Hansen said about 50 people spilled out onto the streets just after 1 am when bars closed in the CBD.

Fighting broke out among several members of the group.

The incident kicked off outside a bar in Jackson St and continued near McDonald’s Restaurant on Chapel St.

Police officers were spat on while arresting the main offenders, Hansen said.

“Being spat on was probably one of the most loathed things to happen because it’s so disgusting and there’s the potential for contamination by who knows what.”

Seven people were pepper-sprayed by police.

Two women, aged 19 and 23, were arrested for fighting.

An 18-year-old man was arrested for obstruction and two men, aged 18 and 20, for disorderly conduct.

Hansen said it was a shame to have an incident of this nature in town involving so many people, as the late-night behaviour of bar patrons had been relatively quiet in recent weeks.

Police search for motorist after crash

Police were also investigating an incident in Wairarapa over the weekend where a motorist took off after a crash in Martinborough.

A dark-coloured Ford Ranger ute heading north along Princess St went through a stop sign at the intersection of Kitchener St at 9 pm on Saturday, Hansen said.

Police are looking for a dark-coloured Ford Ranger which crashed into this ute in Martinborough on Saturday night.
