Two people have been seriously injured following a crash involving two vehicles and a cow near Te Kauwhata before sunrise.

Both patients were trapped when emergency services arrived at the scene of crash on Waerenga Rd shortly before 6am on Wednesday.

One person was critically injured, while another sustained serious injuries, according to St John.

A helicopter and ambulance attended the scene, transporting both patients to Waikato Hospital.

The cow would be euthanised, a police spokeswoman said.

Firefighters had worked to free the pair trapped following the collision, Fire and Emergency NZ northern communications shift manager Carren Larking said.

The road was blocked and diversions were put in place between Cozen and Stannard roads and Waerenga and Taniwha roads.
