“The two people involved were known to each other and police do not believe there is any further risk to the community,” a spokeswoman said.

“Police are likely to be at the scene for a number of days whilst they investigate exactly what occurred this morning.”

Wellington Free Ambulance and the Armed Offenders Squad were called to the incident at a property in Tinui, between Masterton and Castlepoint, just after 5am.

A man who lived close to the scene woke up on Monday to armed police outside his house.

“They are sitting outside my place now. They had their guns out. Looks like they are doing a waiting game,” he said.

Another man spoken to by Stuff said police were at a neighbouring property. The driveway was cordoned off and police were outside.

Paramedics responded to two people who were injured but would not confirm if there had been any fatalities.

Police have not released any more details.
