Uber-owned scooter operator Jump has announced it’ll be putting electric bicycles on the streets of Auckland later this month.

The exact date and pricing is yet to be determined, but if it’s the same as in the US, they’ll cost about 45-50c a minute.

The red e-bikes are powered by rechargeable batteries which will be replaced by technicians when they run out, rather than picked up by “juicers”, like e-scooters.

The bikes will be accessed through the Uber app on your phone. It’s expected there will be more than 600 available.

Jump scooters are already operating in Wellington.

Auckland will be the first city in the Asia-Pacific region to have Jump e-bikes.

“We’ll also bring to Auckland our second-generation Jump e-scooter, with larger wheels, better suspension, a lower centre of gravity, fully hidden brake cables and battery, and an even better braking system,” Jump general manager Henry Greenacre told Newshub last year.

The date for that rollout is also yet to be determined. Others granted scooter licences, following Lime’s exit, include Neuron, Beam and Flamingo.

Onzo pedal-powered bikes have been operating in Auckland since 2017.
