Update: 8:02pm – Nausori businesses believe the old Rewa Bridge should be maintained as the bridge itself has the possibility of generating income.

Nausori Town Council, Chief Executive Akhtar Ali says the old bridge can be used as a platform to host business markets.

“There are lots of demands from business stakeholders in terms of what can be done with the old bridge. The Bridge can generate economic activity, advertising, night markets, flea market as well as other business activity. It can also accommodate eco-tourism from the Rewa River.”

Ali says the people of Nausori strongly disagree with the Fiji Roads Authority’s decision to dismantle the old bridge.

He is hoping FRA would do another assessment, perhaps it’s final one whether it can be maintained to a certain standard for economic purposes only.

Meanwhile FRA has made an assessment in terms of the structural integrity of the old bridge and have established that it is unsafe for the public.
