NFA contains Jai Santa Ram fire

Updated: 6:10am – The National Fire Authority managed to contain the fire at the Jai Santa Ram bulk store in the heart of Suva at around mid-day yesterday.

The News understands the fire broke out during the early hours of this yesterday morning forcing numerous neighboring stores, supermarkets and roads to close.

NFA Chief Fire Officer, Qionilau Moceitai confirmed that the Jai Santa Ram supermarket was saved from the fire, however, the Lotus Garment factory and the supermarket bulk store was fully engulfed with flames.

“We have managed to control the fire and we are still on the field to extinguish all the burning stuff that is right inside the building, we haven’t done our investigations yet, at the moment we are using a digger to clear the burning material inside, so that we can gain access to the inner part of the building to fully extinguish the burning materials.”

Moceitai has also confirmed that Robertson road and Nina Street are still closed till further notice as debris from the fire is yet to be cleaned up.

NFA is yet to ascertain the total cost of damage as investigations is yet to begin.
