A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer and then fleeing before crashing at a road works site in Auckland. The incident started in Massey around 10 pm on Wednesday.
Officers were talking to the driver of a vehicle near Royal Rd when they noticed drug utensils on the passenger seat. The driver then assaulted the police officer and drove away at high speed towards Avondale.
The Police Air Support Unit called the Eagle, responded, and saw the vehicle traveling southbound on State Highway 20 before getting off the motorway.
Police used a tire deflation device, and the vehicle crashed into a road maintenance vehicle on Beach Road. The driver tried to escape on foot but was arrested shortly after.
No serious injuries were reported to the officer or any road workers involved. Charges against the man are currently being considered.
