A 26-year-old man from Glen Innes has been arrested and charged with 27 counts of fraud related to Facebook Marketplace scams. Police recently issued a warrant for his arrest due to multiple fraud incidents across Tāmaki Makaurau.
The man was found and arrested on Saturday night. He was due to appear in the Auckland District Court today and faced 27 fraud charges, all alleged to relate to sales on Facebook Marketplace.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton, Auckland City CIB, said the arrest came after police saw a “concerning” amount of reports of people being duped by other Facebook Marketplace users.
The unit saw up to 60 monthly reports of this type of crime. Police urge users to exercise caution, do their due diligence first, and avoid becoming victims.
They advised people using the buy-and-sell platform to insist on conducting transactions, meet in a public place with friends, ensure they have received the item before depositing money into another person’s account, learn more about the person they are buying from or selling to, and trust their instincts.
