A man is believed to have been shot in a firearms incident in Otangarei, Whangārei.
Police arrived at William Jones Drive around 2.30 pm and found him in a severe condition.
Residents were advised to stay away from the area while police searched for those involved.
A large number of police officers are investigating the matter.
