A pregnant woman was critically injured in a serious crash involving a stolen vehicle in a small town in Northland. Police were called to the incident on State Highway 1 in Ōkaihau at around 9.08 pm on Monday.
The other vehicle, driven by an unlicensed child, was stolen earlier from Moerewa. The unborn baby died, and the woman remains in a critical but stable condition.
Three of the youths in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from critical to moderate. Far North Area Commander Inspector Riki Whiu described the crash as “selfish and mindless behavior” and called it the worst outcome for the community, whānau, and responding emergency services. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
