A woman tragically passed away after slipping and falling while climbing Mount Ruapehu.
She was with a group near Whangaehu Hut on the eastern mountain when the incident occurred around 11 am.
Despite the immediate response and efforts from emergency services, including the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation, and Tukino Ski Field staff, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
A rāhui was placed on the mountain’s eastern slopes until 6 am on Tuesday.
Sergeant Shane McNally characterized the incident as “tragic” and stressed the significance of being mentally and physically well-prepared for the alpine environment.
