Auckland police are urging drivers to adjust their driving habits

Auckland police are reminding drivers to adjust their driving to the current road conditions after three motorway crashes occurred within three hours late yesterday afternoon, which coincided with the risk of thunderstorms.

The northern parts of the region are under a yellow rain watch, while the rest of Auckland is expected to experience rain, possibly heavy, clearing to fine spells with isolated showers in the evening.

Heavy traffic is reported on State Highway 1 between Penrose and the city and on parts of State Highway 20 near Manukau.

Three crashes occurred in quick succession across the motorway network earlier yesterday. Around 1 p.m., emergency services were first called to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 20 southbound, near Cavendish Drive.

A four-car crash in the nearby Waterview Tunnel closed several lanes at about 1:15 p.m., with no serious injuries reported. Around 2 p.m., another crash involving two cars northbound on the Southern Motorway near the Khyber Pass off-ramp was also reported.

As of 3:30 p.m., the three crashes have been cleared, but police are warning of increasing traffic congestion across the network.
