Hamilton-based dairy company Milkio Foods Limited has been fined $420,000 for claiming that some of its products are “100% Pure New Zealand” despite the core ingredients being imported from India.

The Commerce Commission revealed that Milkio used false and incomplete information to retain approval to use the FernMark logo and license number meant to identify products made in New Zealand.

The company admitted to 15 breaches of the Fair Trading Act. That Includes false representations about the country of origin of the butter used in its ghee products.

The company was using the FernMark logo and license number without proper authorization.

The Commerce Commission’s fair trading general manager, Vanessa Horne, said Milkio took advantage of New Zealand’s strong reputation.

He promoted high-quality dairy products from clean, green pasture-based farms in New Zealand. Claiming they were produced and manufactured in pristine New Zealand.
