Helicopter pilot sentenced to community service for giving unauthorized rides

A 59-year-old Otago pilot was sentenced to 325 hours of community service. The pilot violated civil aviation rules by flying a helicopter without an appropriate license, Air Operator Certificate, or medical approval.

The pilot, who sold helicopter rides, failed to provide information and obstructed the Civil Aviation Authority investigation.

Judge David Robinson described his behavior as “cavalier,” stating that he flagrantly disregards rules to keep the community safe.

The Civil Aviation Authority was awarded costs, and its deputy chief executive, Dean Winter, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the aviation system.

The pilot’s actions posed a significant risk to passengers and the public.
