New Zealand Police has changed its eligibility criteria, allowing people with restricted driver’s licenses to apply for police officers.
Assistant Commissioner Jill Rogers announced the changes, allowing applicants to apply while on their restricted license.
Successful applicants must obtain a full license before starting their training. The changes are expected to increase the potential pool of recruits by thousands, with over 250,000 people currently holding a restricted license in New Zealand.
The changes also return to the 2017 eligibility criteria, allowing people with a residency visa to apply.
The changes come as 322 New Zealand police officers applied to work in Queensland alone in the last year.
Rogers acknowledged that the selection criteria created unnecessary barriers for exceptional candidates and stated that the changes would make the process more agile and fit for purpose.
