Over the last year, there has been a 25% increase in migrant arrivals in New Zealand, while departures have gone up by almost a third. According to Stats NZ, around 130,600 migrant departures took place in the year leading up to April, making it the highest number recorded over a 12-month period.

The net gain of 98,500 migrants in the year to April is a substantial figure, reflecting a robust migration trend. This gain was primarily driven by 154,900 non-citizens, which helped to offset a net loss of 56,500 New Zealand citizens. In a significant development, a record 56,000 New Zealand citizens departed the country in April.

Between April 2002 and 2013, the average annual net migration loss of New Zealand citizens was 26,800, decreasing to 6,500 between April 2014 and 2019. The largest group of migrant arrivals was from India, followed by citizens of the Philippines and China.
