A 13-year-old girl, Kymani Hiley-Hetaraka, died after falling and hitting her head while ice-skating at Alpine Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch.
She suffered an unsurvivable head injury and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Kymani was ice-skating with her school, Haeata Community Campus.
The school’s principal, Dr. Peggy Burrows, confirmed Kymani’s death from her injuries. The school community expressed deep sadness and expressed their support for Kymani and her family.
Alpine Ice Sports Centre closed out of respect to Kymani and her family on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The company expressed heartbreak and expressed their thoughts and prayers for Kymani’s family during this difficult time.
Alpine’s staff, management, and directors are heartbroken to learn from media reports that Kymani’s injuries are not survivable.
