A man in Porirua was arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a member of the public. The man was driving in Waitangirua when police signaled for him to stop.

Instead, he fled in a grey sedan and continued driving onto State Highway 59 at Paremata. The police stopped the pursuit because of the man’s reckless driving.

Near Kāpiti, the man took a blue saloon from another public member and drove it south on Transmission Gully. The man then exited at Waitangirua, and the car was eventually stopped by police on Champion Street in Porirua.

The 28-year-old alleged driver is now facing multiple charges, including failing to stop, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, failing to comply with conditions of a protection order, operating a motor vehicle recklessly, and robbery.

An investigation is underway, and the police are seeking footage from witnesses, including dash cam footage, cellphones, and CCTV cameras. The man is due to reappear in Porirua District Court on Wednesday.
