During the construction at Paekākāriki Surf Club, the remains of two humans were found. This was due to the coastal erosion caused by climate change threatening Queen Elizabeth Park’s coastal edge.

The construction plan, set in motion six weeks ago, was abruptly halted by the profound significance of the discoveries. These remains, known as kōiwi in Māori culture, are not just bones but a living testament to a rich historical narrative dating back to pre-settlement times. They are invaluable to Ngāti Toa and the area, holding the key to our past.

The discoveries have been duly reported to the coroner, and the construction has resumed. Ngāti Toa, respecting the matter’s sensitivity, has chosen not to comment at this time.
