Tommy Smith is back in the All Whites for the first time since 2014.

The Ipswich Town defender has been named in the New Zealand squad for the up-and-coming World Cup qualifiers against Fiji.

All Whites coach Anthony Hudson froze Smith out of the side last year due to a perceived lack of commitment to the All Whites.

But they’ve mended their relationship and Hudson said he deserves selection.

“Aside from that scenario he is a good character, he’s a captain-type figure in the team and he’s a quality player so I’m really pleased.”

Fellow 2010 world cup players Winston Reid and Shane Smeltz are also back in the squad, along with uncapped brothers Jai and Dane Ingham.

Jai has made 15 appearances for the Melbourne Victory this A-League season, while Dane has started just two matches for the Brisbane Roar.

Hudson said he’s had his eye on the brothers for a while.

“At this stage, I’m only adding players who can add to the squad. These two players are definitely players that can add to the squad right now. I’ve definitely seen enough from both to know that they can come in and improve what we’re doing.”

Hudson said it’s the best squad he’s ever named.

“We’ve got quality all around the pitch. We’ve got depth… and the best thing about is we’ve got a really really good blend of experience and also youth.”

Phoenix forward Kosta Barbarouses and England-based players Liam Graham and Rory Fallon are amongst those to miss out.
