NZ: Two dead in South Island crashes

Two people have been killed in separate car crashes.

A woman was killed after the car she was a passenger in collided with a truck south of Dunedin at about 3am.

Police said the car’s driver suffered serious injuries and was still trapped in his vehicle.

The crash has closed State Highway 1 south of the city at the Dunedin Airport turn-off.

A male car driver was killed in a separate truck and car collision in South Canterbury, also at about 3am, police said.

The truck driver was treated at the scene but did not have any serious injuries, and there were no passengers in other vehicle.

The crash, just south of Makikihi, has closed State Highway 1 and diversions were in place for light vehicle, police said.

Diversions were also in place at the scene of the Dunedin crash.
