Two police officers were injured in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver in Lower Hutt. The patrol car was travelling along Waiwhetu Road.
The vehicle crossed the centre line and crashed into the side, causing extensive damage to the patrol car. The vehicle fled the scene with the help of a police dog unit.
Inspector Simon de Wit said the safety features protected the officers. The incident highlights the impact of decisions made as a driver on others.
The patrol car is likely to be written off, and a 29-year-old man from Upper Hutt is now facing serious charges.
