Updated: 7:52am – Any remote hope the Wellington Phoenix of turning around their dismal season and making the A League football playoffs has been dashed.

The Phoenix were trounced 4-nil by the Western Sydney Wanderers. For the Phoenix it’s back-to-back four-goal thumpings from Sydney-based sides.

Kalezić opted for a return to a 4-2-3-1 formation with Goran Paracki returning to midfield but with the visitors looking initially on top it was the hosts who opened the scoring with their first meaningful attack.

Western Sydney led 1-nil at halftime then dominated throughtout the second half.

They went two nil up in ten minutes into the second half and added another ten minutes later with the fourth coming shortly before fulltime as the hosts leapfrogged Brisbane Roar back into the top six.

The Phoenix now play Perth Glory in Wellington on Saturday.
