Updated: 7:35am – The Director of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Ashwin Raj says 1987 coup leader and SODELPA Leader, Sitiveni Rabuka is still making the same argument about race which he was doing in 1987.
Raj has raised serious concern about Rabuka’s comments that Fiji will continue to have racial politics although the communal voting system is no longer in place.
He says people forget that the role of the commission is to uphold principles of non discrimination and it is important that the commission speaks out against racial and religious intolerance, and bigotry.
Raj says the 2013 Constitution marks a significant break from the politics of the past as the Constitution for the first time extends substantive equality to all without pandering to divide and rule tactics of our colonial and post‑independence past.
Sitiveni Rabuka has told Legend FM News that he is moving forward and leaving the past behind.
However the SODELPA Leader says he knows that Fiji will continue to have racial politics as the needs of the communities differ.
