Reports received about inciting hatred towards Muslim community

Updated: 6:15am – The issue about some people inciting hatred towards the Muslim community in Fiji on social media was brought up during the 19th Attorney General’s Conference in Natadola on Saturday.

During the question and answer session on the topic of regulation of cyber space, a question was asked whether relevant authorities were aware of these comments posted by certain people on social media.

Director of Public Prosecution Christopher Pryde says they have received some reports and are currently investigating the matter.

“We do have some matters before us for consideration and as you know the police act on the complaints that are being received and they investigate and the matter is sent up to us to consider whether there’s sufficient evidence or matter of seeing whether there is sufficient evidence to bring a charge and we do have some matters that’s with our office at the moment.”

Independent Law Practice Professional Aca Rayawa says there should be harsh penalties imposed on people who post these threats.

“These perpetrators they are raising issues like Islamizing Fiji threatening a minority in Fiji, Muslims in Fiji only consists of about 7% of the population, how can they Islamize the whole of Fiji..what is being done to these very few people overseas who are raising this very serious issue about victimizing this minority group in Fiji.”

Meanwhile, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum closed the conference yesterday evening with more than five hundred participant’s part of the annual forum.
