The train driver was shaken but uninjured and is receiving support. The line will remain closed until police clear it to reopen.

The New Zealand Transport Agency closed a stretch of State Highway 3 between Radnor Rd and Lombard St, implemented a detour, and advised motorists to expect delays.

A serious-conditioning person was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance.

Stratford is about a 40-minute drive from New Plymouth.
