Update: 7:29am – Specialist doctors from the Sahyadri Hospital in India are in Labasa conducting screening for persons living with disability.

Close to a 100 people turned up for the free screening yesterday and it will continue today.

This is the first ever initiative undertaken by the Governments of Fiji and India aimed at providing the best medical care to persons living with disability in Fiji.

Director Sahyadri Speciality Pacific Hospital Limited Manu Munibhargav says a team of seven doctors from the Sahydri Hospital in India who specialise in orthopaedic and ophthalmology are conducting the screenings.

“This time we have the aim and objective to find out the disabled people, who can be made able with the application of advanced medical technology. We are focusing on spine patients – orthopedic deformatory and those who have having ophthalmology problems like blindness, retina and so on and so forth.”

While the screening is being done for free, government is looking at how it can assist those who will be identified to undergo surgery her in Fiji or in India.

The screenings will be held in Suva from tomorrow (Saturday) and then to the Western Division next week.
