All Wellington train services have once again been suspended, after earlier resuming following a power outage.

Power was restored at about 8 am causing significant delays, but now a further issue has hit the trains.

“Services on all lines are now suspended again in and out of Wellington due to the earlier overhead power issue,” a statement from Metlink says.

“Due to an obstruction on the overhead that has caused damage to multiple trains; all trains that have been through the damaged section of lines will need to be taken out of service and inspected to prevent further damage to unaffected trains or overhead power lines.

“We are currently trying to source bus replacements and will keep you updated when we get more information.”

Kapiti, Hutt Valley and Melling line services resumed after 8 am but were significantly delayed.

Services on the Johnsonville line were being replaced by buses between Wellington and Ngaio.

Tawa resident Mike Campbell said he got on the train Kāpiti line train at Redwood at 7.35am and was only arriving at Wellington station at 8.20am – a delay of about 20 minutes.

“It was mildly inconvenient but that’s just the nature of trains I guess.”

The passengers were made aware of the power outage while the issue was resolved, he said.

Metlink spokeswoman Emily Liddell said the trains were stopped in their tracks by a power outage, but that was all they knew at this stage.
