Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet will discuss Tabuya's proposal to reinstate the death penalty
Fiji's Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka.

PM Sitiveni Rabuka, has expressed his stance on the proposal by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya.

Tabuya reinstated the death penalty for individuals found with large amounts of drugs. Rabuka stated that Fiji still has the death penalty in its laws, but it is currently suspended.

The Cabinet and the country’s social leadership will discuss Tabuya’s proposal. It will only be implemented after we discuss it.

Fiji abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1979 and for all crimes in 2015, with the last execution occurring in 1964.

She emphasized that the public interest to protect children, youth, citizens. Also, borders outweighs the individual’s right to life and cruel and unusual punishment.

If the Cabinet and Parliament agree, the proposal can be part of public consultations on the review of the 2013 Constitution.
