Former Australian Rugby World Cup winner Phil Kearns and a fellow television pundit appear to have jumped the gun with a claim Wales scored an offside try in their win over the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup last night.

Kearns and ex‑Australian loose forward Stephen Hoiles blasted New Zealand TMO Ben Skeen and referee Romain Poite for not checking to see if Wales halfback Gareth Davies was onside before his intercept try in Wales’ 29‑25 win.

Both were adamant Davies was offside with Kearns claiming he was 2 metres in front of his own defensive line.

However, a screenshot of the incident – in the 38th minute – shows Davies was onside when Australia halfback Will Genia released the pass.

Kearns said on a Fox Sports Australia television panel that the whole refereeing display has been disgraceful, not only by Romain Poite but by Ben Skeen.

Footage of the incident showed Davies, renowned for his speed, pounced on Genia’s pass and ran half the length of the field to score.

Meanwhile, in the lone game today, Samoa takes on Scotland at 10.15pm.
