The Fijian government has announced that student bus fares will now be the same as adult fares. Starting September 1, bus fares for all students will increase by 50%.
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has reviewed the current fare calculation method.
The commission has introduced a new calculation method in collaboration with the Fiji Bus Operators Association.
Under the transport assistance scheme, the government will fully subsidize students with blue cards.
It will also subsidize the 50% fare increase for students using yellow cards, ensuring their access to affordable transportation.
The government is also working to discuss the timeline for the yellow card subsidy with Acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka.
Additionally, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has reviewed the current fare.
The calculation methodology is conducting consultations to seek public input.
