The State Counsel has indicated that a trial date will be set for the case involving former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho. Bainimarama is facing charges of unwarranted demands by a public official and abuse of office.

Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, a figure of significant influence, is accused of making an unwarranted demand to terminate the employment of Penieli Nayare Ratei and Tomasi Naulu. This demand was accompanied by threats of resignation if not complied with, a clear abuse of power.

Former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho is charged with one count of abuse of office. He is accused of reviewing a disciplinary decision made by Tudravu, the Acting Commissioner of Police, against Naulu and terminating the employment of the two officers.

Qiliho faces an additional charge of Abuse of Office, contrary to Section 139 of the Crimes Act 2009, as he also reviewed a disciplinary decision made by Tudravu and terminated Ratei’s employment. The matter has been adjourned to 16th July.
