The increasing number of suicide cases among children has sparked a call for increased awareness

The rise in suicide cases among children aged 12-17 in Fiji has prompted a call for increased awareness.

Three out of four suicide cases recorded last month were school students.

Permanent Secretary for Education Selina Kuruleca, a Mental Health Professional, has called for collaboration with NGO partners and the Substance Abuse Advisory Council to combat the rising suicide cases.

She believes suicide is a multifaceted issue that requires a coordinated public health multisectoral approach.

The Ministry of Education is working with churches and other partners to address this issue.

Fiji Police Force statistics show that there have been 56 suicides this year compared to 60 cases last year.

As of July 22, the number of attempted suicide cases stands at 44, a decrease from 44 last year.
