According to Assistance Minister for Women Sashi Kiran, Fiji needs a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to address past wounds.
The commission is working on raising awareness, educating the public, and drafting a bill to establish it.
The president or government will appoint TRC members, but they are expected to work independently.
The TRC will function similarly to other existing commissions in Fiji, with clear roles and responsibilities defined by law.
The draft bill, which will be tabled in Parliament, is expected to be ready in the next few months.
The initial plan is for the TRC to operate for 18 months in Fiji, but the president can only grant an extension.
