A serious crash in South Canterbury has left three people dead and two others seriously injured.
The incident occurred when two vehicles, a four-wheel drive and a people-mover, collided on State Highway 79.
The deceased was part of a group visiting the district, and the driver of the four-wheel-drive was also seriously injured.
Both surviving victims were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
Aoraki Area Commander Inspector Vicki Walker expressed shock at the loss of so many lives and expressed support for those involved.
The incident is causing distress for both the victims and the surrounding communities.
