When the victim went to retrieve the grog bowl which was under the bed, the man locked up the house and proceeded to undress and rape his 17-year-old niece.

There were two other incidents, one of which the uncle indecently assaulted the victim who had visited his sister at his home and the other where he raped her when she had gone to his house to attend a funeral gathering.

High Court Judge Aruna Aluthge in sentencing told the convicted rapist that he used a young and mentally challenged child to satisfy his lustful demands, a very serious offence.

Justice Aluthge added that the courts and society must ensure that disabled persons are specifically protected, not only the offender himself but also the potential offenders must be deterred.

The man has been sentenced to 11 years and 10 months imprisonment.
He will be eligible for parole after serving 9 years.
