Update: 6:12 am – Speaking at the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals Exhibition in Suva last night, Bainimarama said our survival in the Pacific depends on Fiji being the incoming COP 23 President.

He says we are going to need all the collective strength we can muster to keep negotiations with other countries on track.

“This is not some abstract thing that exists in charts and graphs. It is a real-world challenge affecting the lives and livelihoods of people around the world. This is why an exhibition like this is so important in highlighting the urgency of implementing all of the SDGs and especially SDG 13 because as I have said repeatedly, no sustainable development is possible without decisive action of climate change.”

Bainimarama says Fiji will still continue to strongly advocate on climate change for the sake of people’s lives in the Pacific even though US President Donald Trump has turned his back from the issue.

The PM also announced a photography competition where both professional and amateur photographers can submit photos showing the human and environmental impacts of climate change and how individual and groups are mobilizing to counter this threat.
