Detective Inspector Greg Murton said the woman, aged in her late 30s, was visiting the home and was not there alone when the incident happened.

Emergency services were called about 2.10am, a police spokeswoman said.

Canterbury district commander Superintendent John Price said an investigation found there were no suspicious circumstances.

He said the cause of the woman’s death was yet to be determined, but inquiries found her injuries were “consistent with a fall”.

“Police will be awaiting toxicology results.”

The scene was under police cordon for much of Friday.

The woman’s death has been referred to the coroner.
