WORLD NEWS:- Jetstar pilots in Australia forgot to lower the landing gear

Pilots of a Jetstar flight in May 2018 in Australia were forced to abort two landings after they had forgotten to lower the landing gear.

On the first attempt, the aircraft’s captain found the planes airspeed and altitude were higher than normal for an approach, and ordered the first officer to abort the landing.

On the second approach, it wasn’t until a warning alarm sounded that the crew realised the landing gear was not down.

The flight, travelling from Sydney to Ballina on New South Wales’ North Coast, finally landed safely on its third attempt.

Information from the eventful flight has been released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, who found the crew were likely distracted from attempting to rectify the first landing attempt.

“In this case a number of factors, such as distraction and limited use of aircraft automation, combined to result in the landing gear not being selected to down,” said ATSB Director Transport Safety Director Dr Stuart Godley.

“While highly undesirable, it should be noted that the aircraft’s warning system effectively alerted the flight crew to the problem and the crew responded promptly to the warning and initiated a second go-around.”
