Two people have had a “miraculous” escape after their plane crashed into a ski lift in Italy. The light aircraft ended up tangled in the wires at the Prato Valentino ski resort at Teglio, in the Italian Alps.

The 62-year-old pilot was thrown from the plane and needed hospital treatment, while his 55-year-old passenger had to be rescued from the cockpit by the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino Speleologico, Italy’s national cave and mountain rescue unit. Spokesman Walter Milan said the duo were “very, very lucky”.

“The rescue operation was very tricky. The rescuers had to very carefully maneuver along the cables very, very slowly. We didn’t want the cables moving any more than necessary,” reports the Mirror Online.

“Ropes were then secured around the two men. The whole operation to bring them to safety took an hour and a half. We had 20 rescue personnel and two helicopters involved. It’s believed the plane suddenly lost power, and an investigation has been launched.the pilot’s injuries are not said to be serious. The ski lift was not operational at the time.
