A UK man has been convicted of attempted murder for telling his wife he had a present and then stabbing her in the neck.

Shaun May told his wife Laura May to close her eyes before covering her face with a tea towel and attacking her in October last year, The Sun reports.

The knife narrowly missed vital arteries and Laura eventually recovered from her injuries.

She told the jury in court she had no idea what was going to happen, and had initially thought her husband had got her a new pet before the attack.

“I said to him ‘This had better be a puppy’ because we had talked about having one but he said ‘It’s not a puppy’,” The Sun reports she told the court.

Shaun drove Laura to the hospital after the attack, where she told staff she had injured herself, before eventually admitting it was her husband.

She broke down in tears when a nurse told her police had been called and admitted the truth. Shaun was then spoken to by a psychiatric nurse, who said he was “insightful and understanding”.

He claims he planned to kill Laura and then himself after losing his job and becoming concerned about the couple’s financial situation.

“I picked up the knife and rather than injure myself I took it out on Laura,” he told the court.

Shaun will be sentenced later this year.
